This module aims to introduce you to major topics and areas of debate in the sociology of gender. This will be achieved through the study of feminist theory and theories of gender as well as some empirical material. The particular focus will be on gender in contemporary industrial societies although to develop an understanding of contemporary gender issues references to historical contexts and development are made at times. By the end of the module you should have acquired a broad map of current thinking in the sociology of gender as well as an understanding of key theoretical debates. The module will explore the empirical and theoretical interconnections between gender, bodies, sexuality, 'race' and class, and related inequalities.
This module aims to:
- Introduce major topics and areas of debate in the Sociology of Gender through the study of recent empirical research and feminist theory, with particular reference to contemporary societies.
- Explore the empirical and theoretical intersections between categories of differentiation such as gender, race, class, sexuality, nationality and (dis)ability.
- Equip students to understand the contributions of various feminist perspectives in order to avoid universal ideas regarding gender, society and institutions.
- Develop discussions about how gender is present in the cultural, social and political structures of different societies for in depth understandings of how society is organised.
Upon completion of this module, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate awareness and critical understanding of challenges facing gender inequality and its intersections.
- Have an informed insight about gender in Global South and Global North thought the diversity of experiences, literature and study-cases.
- Engage with relevant concepts and literature on Gender Studies through seminar participation and in the final exam.
- Apply key theories to a range of topics, study cases and materials related to gender in its various contexts and standpoints.
- Clearly communicate through critical analytical skills, key ideas, concepts and literature related to gender and society.
- Develop the ability to use and analyse different sources of materials and references to explore in-depth the different social constructions of gender.
